In the post game interview Vlad stated that he had been sitting on Rg8 for 2+ years, but then failed to remember his prep.

Even though I'm something of a Fabi fanboy, I wouldn't mind seeing Kramnik win this. And I think it would be good for chess to have the "old guy" challenging the young wizard in November.

Hasn’t it been this way for nearly 20 years?

Bravo, Vlad. What a game.

Re: 2018 Candidates Thread

I'm home today because of the snowstorm in the Northeast, and I just learned that the Candidates have a rest day today...grrrr

On a positive note, the first round of the Pro Chess League playoffs will be occurring today, beginning at 12 noon (EST).

Well, I don't think it's fair for him to claim he failed to remember it. I know he said that but he certainly remembered enough even if he didn't have the exact intricacies memorized.

Yeah, I think this is implied. I take it to mean he didn't have all of the various lines at his fingertips, but I'm sure he remembered why it was good and what his general plans were.

Of course, he can't create this masterpiece without the help of Aronian so I'm sure at some point early on he was playing on his on merits.

I dunno...it's hard to imagine Kramnik beating Carlsen. Their playing styles are kind of similar, Carlsen is just better at it now. Excluding blitz and rapid, it looks like their last 10 games have been Carlsen 3, Kramnik 1, draw 6. I'd guess Kramnik to be unlikely to be able to do better than that percentage in a match.

Re: 2018 Candidates Thread

I will be going to Berlin tomorrow afternoon and visit the Candidates on Friday. Got a 107€ VIP ticket, which I expect is overpriced but gives me access to basically everything. Will report back on Saturday, hopefully with pictures.

Re: 2018 Candidates Thread

I am looking at the Kramnik-Caruana match right now.

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.Qe2

This looks like Kramnik is perfectly happy with a draw.

5...Qd7 6.Nc3 Nxc3 7.dxc3 Qxe2+ 8.Bxe2

All 23 games with that position on 365chess.com ended in a draw.

8.- Nc6 9.Be3 Be7 10.0-0-0 0-0 11.Rhe1

How would you even try to turn this into a win against a world class player? Why did Kramnik choose this very unambitious variation?

Re: 2018 Candidates Thread

It reminds me of an old Fischer quote about how he planed to win a tournament.

Fischer: "Play even with the top players and beat all the rabbits"

Interviewer: "What if you lose a game?"

Fischer: "I'll have to find another rabbit!"

Wild game. Fabi had a big lead, then Kramnik, but is apparently going to be tough to convert.

Insane that this Grischuk-Liren game is going to end up drawn. Was a great sweat in any case.

Re: 2018 Candidates Thread

Now apparently he has to find an only move to not end up losing (disclaimer: the engine says so. I know ****all about the position).

Svidler of course (who does not have an engine running) just said something along the lines of "this is probably a draw now with black winning occasionally".

Levon bouncing back right away seems really important, still very much in the tournament.

Re: 2018 Candidates Thread

rooting for caruana to somehow rat**** kramnik out of this one. Kramnik in some pretty mean time pressure, even if he makes times control at move 60 (+15mins for rest of game at move 60.)
