Re: 2016 WCC Discussion Thread

In chess time controls are displayed in the [mm +ss] format. For the rapid games of tonight (which have a time control of 25 +10) that means you get 25 minutes for the entire game, but every time you hit the clock after you made a move, 10 seconds get added to your total.

Re: 2016 WCC Discussion Thread

SN,

thank you for the explanation, but why do they use such an odd system and not leave it at e.g. 25 mins each for a rapid game?

Because otherwise it would become a mess towards the end of the game. With an increment at least they have a small amount of time to move

Re: 2016 WCC Discussion Thread

An increment gives a player a shot at building their time back up rather than just dead running out. And at the same time it preserves the objective of keeping the game moving quickly.

I obviously don't understand the position at all (not at this pace anyway) but looks like it's about level again as per the supercomp.

Re: 2016 WCC Discussion Thread

Magnus blunder hype 62. Bg4? (the Sesse engine is no longer seeing a forced mate for White).

The Chessnetwork Twitch channel now has 45K viewers and will surely cross 50K soon, is being featured on the Twitch main page, obv.

Game 2 is in the bullet mode now

Edit: it's officially a draw now due to the wrong colour bishop. Karjakin is a legit minister of defence.

About the same number of viewers on chess24's stream. I really like ChessNetwork Jerry, but I'm not going to not listen to Peter Svidler talk about chess if I can help it.

Oh, I'm glad the c24 stream is up now (it was down for me in the first few minutes of the tiebreaks).

Anyway, reading the Twitch chat is so much fun that I'll keep the tab with Jerry's chat open too.

Re: 2016 WCC Discussion Thread

I've gotten hooked on Jerry's commentary because he talks slow enough and explains things in a way that someone of my level can follow it. Svidler often goes over my head.

Re: 2016 WCC Discussion Thread

Didn't someone say Magnus will quit chess? Becoming more and more possible. There aren't even words to describe him missing wins like 5x or something in the same game with different ideas.

It's hard to watch this tbh. K is going to be champ. Put in a magician.

Without increments, a player can lose a winning or easily drawn position simply because he may eventually run out of time no matter quickly he plays.

The standard now is "even though poor clock management should lead you to the natural consequences of time trouble, you should still have at least X amount of seconds per move to keep playing until the game is decided over the board."

The only thing I can come up with is this is like Kasparov imploding vs. Deep Blue. Like, wtf.

Re: 2016 WCC Discussion Thread

Even with Sergey having so little time on the clock, I can't find an explanation for the 38. Rxc7 - Ra1 was sooo obvious at their level.

I'm actually glad for his loss - it means that one of his sponsors, a big Russian real estate developer, won't be able to rise the prices by too much because, as a non-champion, Karjakin will be less efficient as a marketing tool for the company.

Open Sicilian with 5. f3 played!
