He has a good position against Topalov. It would be really cool if he could become a legit rival to Magnus and we could have some exciting world championships etc for a long time.

Hey look, Caruana has a +1 computer eval and 1:26 on the clock (started with 1:30), while Topalov is down to under 1:00 and counting on his clock.

Plus Fabiano can attain live rating 2836.1 if he scores 2.5/3 in rounds 6-8 or 2835.9 after 3/4 in rounds 6-9. 2/2 in rounds 6-7 won't suffice (resulting in live rating 2835.1).

Looking at the position, I thought that my eyes had confused the Black king and rook in what was supposed to be a castle, but then I read in the Chessbomb commentary that 11... Kf8 was an improvement. Fun times.

I hope he doesn't 10/10 because how do you ever top that?

At this point, what are the odds he 10/10s? Gotta' be better than 1/1000, maybe almost as high as 1/500?

odds he goes 10/10 are 1.

He's gonna do it.

Who's gonna stop him?

Spoiler:
Answer: No one.

That's already happened, at least him being a legit rival to Magnus.

The coverage, apart from Maurice Ashley, is starting to get annoying, almost solely because of Yasser and Jen's apathy towards the correct pronunciation of names.

Caruana is now closer to Carlsen than he is to Aronian on the live list.

2862.4 Carlsen
2830.6 Caruana (31.8 behind Carlsen)
2793.3 Aronian (37.3 behind Caruana)

How would cheating be possible in live games?

Interesting read, thanks. I only recently started paying attention to high level chess, mostly due to Jerry's reviews of these tournament matches.

So... what level of tactic do you guys think Fabiano's Bxe6 was? Would a 1500 rated player see it? I think not... 1800? 2000? 2200? 2400? I certainly can't see all of the continuations after the move, but I would look at it because of Rf3... but there are a lot of lines...

It's a bit unfortunate in the coverage that Ashley saw it way earlier with the help of computer analysis as it would have been interesting to see if Yasser and Jen saw it on the board in the position without the assistance.

In a dream last night, someone I was talking to made passing mention of the "upcoming Carlsen-Caruana World Championship match", and I made some remark about how I hadn't heard that they'd replaced Anand, but cool! Then the dream returned to whatever non-chess stuff was otherwise going on.

Why is Caruana playing the zzz Charousek QGD instead of the Grunfeld?

I honestly don't think he's making an active effort to "play for" 10-0, I think he's just trying to play solid chess. Without the streak in play, taking a draw as black would normally be just fine for a tournament leader.

And MVL is melting down in time pressure, with 14. Qa4, 16. Rf1, and 17. Kd2 all being questionable moves. The engine now has Caruana as clearly winning.

I just... don't even. 7-0 coming? Looks inevitable from this position (especially with only 8 minutes on MVL's clock for 22 more moves in the increment)

Lagrave is brilliant, running down his clock because he knows Caruana sucks at Blitz.
