Does Moro have a perpetual now? I don't see how black avoids it.

To clarify, is this time control classed as "rapid" or "blitz"?

at least for longer games the classification is done according to the time allotted for 60 moves, so this would be rapid (15 minutes or more) afaik

Just when thinking Svidler was showing the most tenacity of the day Tomashevsky wins in 169 moves. Impressive strategy with letting Morozevich getting impatient

Commentary team for rounds 5+ is Nigel Short and Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam, by the way. Bios here: http://www.chessworldcup2013.com/new...ommentary-team

I think Morozevich played the opening incorrectly. He played 4. Nd2, but I think the correct idea is 4. Nc3. From c3, the knight threatens the d5 pawn in some lines as well as a timely jump to b5. From d2 is doesn't do much and gets in the way of the c1 bishop.

I could be remembering the line incorrectly, but I think this is right because I've had a 2300 guy play this line against me 3 times. I finally took some time to learn it

I don't know much about these lines in the caro-kann but I would be surprised if Morozevixh played an opening mistake in move 4. And even if the move isn't the move considered normal you have to remember he is Morozevich, not exactly know for playing standard.

the point with 4. Nd2 is to play Nb3 and try to either clamp down on the c5 square or get the two knights protecting each other on d4 and f3 after a pawn trade.

Tomashevsky is now through to the quarterfinals, of course. He's scheduled to play a tournament in Poikovsky, Russia, that begins on day two of the World Cup semifinals.

Now, if he makes the semis then the Poikovsky organizers will "provide a high-rated replacement", that contingency was always in place (as seven of the ten scheduled players for Poikovksy also played in the World Cup). I wonder, though, if Tomashevksy should lose in the quarters, if he will still be expected to play? That would be quite the marathon to force on him, with potentially (if he loses in tiebreaks) only one "rest day" - during which he'd have to travel from Norway to Russia.

Short HATES Kamsky. Should be interesting to see if he can stay neutral at all when discussing kamsky.

I've seen the Nd2 idea in other lines, but I'm not sure how well it mixes in with the g4 lines. I just checked chess.com's online database, which is not totally complete, but mixing Nd2 and g4 is not a popular idea. The position after 4...e6 has been reached 541 times, and 5. g4 has only been played 10 times. The most popular move is overwhelmingly 5. Nb3, which has been played 495 times out of the total. Looks like the g4 ideas are best played after Nc3.

Yeah you're right, mistake is probably too strong of a word. But I don't think it's necessarily the most accurate way to play the position. Part of it could be Moro trying to mix things up in a blitz game.
