Haha, ouch. Lost again (in an actually lost position this time) in the next game and is eliminated, which gets Adhiban into the round of 64 as the second triple digit seed to advance.

Edit: And Adhiban will face Fier next round, so we're guaranteed that someone seeded #91 or lower will make it to the round of 32.

Ramirez has black. All we need is a draw. Come on buddy.

Couldn't find 23. ... Nf4, which would have been such a sick move, and things look grim for Ramirez now.

Dang. Unless a time trouble miracle happens, Ramirez's goose is cooked.

It's over, Ramirez lost. He's played some great chess lately, but it has to be tough to lose in rapid/blitz playoffs in both the US Championship and here also.

Poor kid got jobbed out of a game due to the zero tolerance rule which NOBODY supports (he was present one minute after the starting time) and then they squeezed $500 out of him too. Disgusting

Final list of the 13 underdogs that made it to the second round, along with 51 higher-seeded players:

#67 Mikhail Kobalia
#68 Dariusz Świercz
#71 Anton Filippov
#75 Daniil Dubov
#80 Rafael Leitão
#83 Ray Robson
#85 Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son
#87 Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suárez
#89 Jon Ludvig Hammer
#91 Alexandr Fier
#94 Rubén Felgaer
#102 Baskaran Adhiban
#105 Wei Yi

So that's 32 of the top 34 seeds that got through (including the entire top 23), and 34 of the 38 players who entered the event rated 2700+.

Adhiban/Fier are the only two players on this list who face each other in round two, the rest all have top-64 opponents who are "supposed" to be there. And the games continue tomorrow! As long as tie-breaks prove necessary for at least one matchup in every round, there won't be a rest day until August 29th! So this tournament really is going to just keep on entertaining

Watch out for Dubov, guy is pretty sick.

Also Wei Yi obv.

Trivia question: Which one of the "underdogs" from the BJJ's list did I drink beer with?

I'm going with Jon Ludvig Hammer.

Yep. Both of them could go deep. I'll throw in Robson too because he crushed Volokitin in both classical games.

Fun fact: Given the average rating of the remaining field, if Wei Yi keeps moving forward he can expect to gain about 2.5 rating points each time he draws, possibly more against some of the top players in the field. If he were to win the entire tournament, by drawing every single classical game and then repeatedly winning on tie-breaks, then depending on who he faced in the later rounds, there's a chance he could get his classical rating to 2600. He entered the event at 2551.

I'd put my bet on Kobalia or Hammer.

It would be the best (as a story) if it were one of the teenagers. I'm not going to go that route with a guess though. In the interest of not duplicating other people's guesses, I'll go with Filippov. Really though I feel like it's probably Hammer (or maybe I just want it to be him, because who DOESN'T want to drink a beer with a guy named "Hammer"?)

Haha, should have seen the '"Hammer" answers coming )

Actually it is probably the most unlikely of the bunch, #87 Isan Reynaldo Ortiz Suárez (CUB).
