2010 Foxwoods Open Cancelled 2010 Foxwoods Open Cancelled

Does anybody know why the 2010 Foxwoods Open, ususally held on Easter weekend, has been cancelled? CCA is running the Philadelphia Open on that weekend and billing it as "replaces Foxwoods Open".

The 2009 tournament had 541 players. 2008 had 517 players. 2007 had 574 players. 2006 had 497 players. The very first Foxwoods open in 1999 had 452 players.

This seemed to be one of the biggest events on the CCA tour. So, it's elimination is surprising.

I had been considering playing in this in poker/chess/visit family road trip. To see it cancelled is a big dissapointment.

Note: I have e-mailed CCA asking them.

Foxwoods 2010 was canceled by CCA because Foxwoods Hotel would no longer be giving CCA the chess rate for its players in the tournament.

The hotel was going to be much more expensive per night and CCA figured they would lose out on a lot of customers because of that.

Thus they canceled it.

A shame, I always liked the event.

Yeah, I think they made some announcement to that effect a few months back.

lmao

I'm so sick of Philadelphia chess tournaments tbh.

The location is in downtown Philly and if you're unsure of the area, just think "Brooklyn-like". I don't even feel too safe walking around and there's not much to do around there either.

I much preferred the old location, Adam's Mark Hotel in the golden mile of suburbia right near or in Philadelphia.

It was torn down a few years back, and a Target Country store is now in its place. :-(

I guess the only reason to even consider going now would be cuz it's a 9 round open and norm possibilities..

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels that way!

lmao I heard Obama was around but wasn't sure if people were B.S.-ing about how close he was to the hotel.

I got a response to my e-mail inquiry from CCA:

Quote:
The answer is on our home page, shown below. The room rate was high enough already and we are not going to hold a tournament where the rate is $199 for Saturday and $179 Friday and Sunday for the main hotel and $10-20 less for the other two hotels.

Bill Goichberg

The 2009 Foxwoods Open was held April 8-12. This tournament was always held over Easter weekend (no other weekend was available at Foxwoods), with 9 rounds in the Open Section (5 days, GM & IM norms available), and 7 rounds in the lower sections (choice of 4-day or 3-day schedule). The Foxwoods Open is not planned for 2010 due to a requested huge increase in guest room rates. A new event, the Philadelphia Open, will be held at the Philadelphia Sheraton Hotel over Easter weekend, March 31-April 4, April 1-4 or 2-4, with details similar to the Foxwoods Open. GM and IM norms will be available in the Open Section.

Always liked the Adam's Mark in City Line Ave; it's a shame that's gone.

Downtown Philly, I well remember from the early 1980s, back when I dated a girl who was in med school there.........

ugh, the Adam's Mark was ok, other than the elevators. When they have it downtown it's horrible if you're not staying at the site; it's legitimately scary walking back to your hotel past all the homeless/drug addicts, although it was cool to see Jay Z perform at the Live 8 concert which was happening literally right outside the door of the site a couple years back.

I kinda miss the Adam's Mark too, but it wasn't as safe as you all make it out to be. Four friends of mine were robbed at gunpoint by two men in a car who stopped them as they were walking from the hotel to the nearby shopping center at 1:00 AM.

It would have been nice if they brought the tournament back to Manhattan. Foxwoods was kind of a replacement for the New York Open anyway.

Yeah I think any reasonably good location in Manhattan would be at least the current hotel room prices of Foxwoods for 2010, and probably why Goichberg didn't opt for a return to New York.

However as my non-chess player friend says... if a ton of chess players are from New York, how come there aren't ever any major prize tournaments here!?!?!

I'm guessing a majority of people would just commute to the tourney from NYC, and if from tri-state area prob. just stay with friends. Maybe it was too expensive to rent a location, and that's why Goichberg just went to Philly.

If there was a New York Open in 2010, I'd probably be 99.9% to play in it, as opposed to about 5-10% to play in the Philadelphia Open.

Tis a shame.

Obama stayed was in the hotel.

A)Jennifer Shahade wrote about how players saw him in the gym with SS agents at 9am on the saturday

B)An undercover cop seriously did stop me and tell me i couldnt park in the garage. I then had to back out of that stuid tight bend they have and it was fairly impossible.
