Btw, do you guys actually like chess.com? Maybe it's because I'm so used to gameknot, but this site feels somewhat annoying, bulky and bubbly, where things aren't where I want them to be. I blame all of my future losses on the interface!

OK, another dumb question from me. How exactly do the time controls work? Am I correct that this is Bronstein-style delay (initial time=0 days, delay=3 days)? (Compared to Fischer-style increment, which, for some reason, I thought was typical for correspondence chess.)

Sorry for asking these questions here, I can't seem to find answers to even basic stuff like this on chess.com.

I guess it's a Bronstein-style delay, though I never really thought of it in those terms. Whenever you move, your opponent then gets 3 days (72 hours) to make their move. Nothing cumulative adds up.

That makes things very simple. Thanks for clarifying.

It's annoying with the adds. If you become a member it's less so.

My membership expired and I'm hating it right now.

What ads do you mean? The only ad-like thing I have ever seen there is the link to their member benefit page. I am browsing with NoScript though, so I rarely see ads on any sites.

In any case, I'd have used the word "lean" instead of "bulky". I'd like to customize the "My Home" screen a bit more, but otherwise I don't have any complaints on usability and appearance of the site.

I guess I'm not really a fan of chess.com's visual format, but I'm also very much not a visual person, so I don't really care. I like their content (specifically tactics trainer and chess mentor) enough to pay for a premium membership, which has made it (by default) my site of choice for correspondence play, and so I've never tried anywhere else.

If you're specifically wondering why I chose chess.com for this tournament, it's quite simply that chess.com is the only place I've ever played correspondence chess, and I knew that chess.com has the option to create a custom invite-only tournament that would allow me to run this. Could I perhaps have run it elsewhere as well? Probably, but I don't really know, and that's why I didn't

No I think it's fine. It makes the most sense as we already have a "team" there.

Kyle fears no gambit, ever. Which is why he consistently gets burned by them

Perhaps then Kyle SHOULD fear some gambits ...

he shouldn't fear any opening. If you have problems in some lines, book up, analyse and beat them next time.

My action to any gambit will always be to be offended. "What, you think I can't handle that?" Even if I can't.

nearly the right attitude imo (minus getting offended)

I am afraid you are too late.

As laid out in post #1, it has already started on November 26th.

I re-posted my SN again in this thread

maybe you got an invitation but forgot to register for the tournament? IIRC all members of team 2+2 got invited to the tournament regardless of this thread. But it was still necessary to register for the tournament.

I never received any invite on chess.com. I checked DAILY.

Hokay, so. I screwed up on this one. I completely overlooked MidyMat's 11/19 request for an invitation. I saw his second request, but it came too late. I also ignored his PMs (repeatedly telling myself "I'll respond tomorrow") because I didn't really want to admit that I'd made a mistake. For that I would like to publically apologize.

Now, as for how to fix it, I think there is still a way. Joshua_Livingston has withdrawn from the tournament, and I feel we are early enough in round 1 that it is entirely reasonable to simply replace him with MidyMat. Of course I can't actually formally replace him within the chess.com tournament structure, so we'll have to go outside the bounds of that structure to resolve this, but we're creative here, right?

MidyMat: Please send two challenges on chess.com to each of the following four players: KerryStead, BobJoeJim, valenzuelaalvaro, and KyleMayhugh. Set the time controls at 3 days/move, set yourself to play white in one of the games and black in the other.

To the three of those four players who aren't me: Please accept both of MidyMat's challenges and play those games in place of the ones that Joshua_Livingston resigned.

At the end of round #1, I will manually re-calculate the Group #3 standings including MidyMat's games in place of Joshua_Livingston's. If the top two in my manual re-calculations are the same as the top two in the chess.com results (ie MidyMat finishes 3-5, and results against him aren't different enough to affect the order of the other players), then all will be well organizationally and we'll proceed with round #2 within the base tournament structure on chess.com. If the result of MidyMat's games DO alter the standings, then we'll figure out then what challenges need to be made outside the bounds of the tournament structure to maintain the proper order.

And thus spaketh BobJoeJim.

People make mistakes, but there is no need for me to come in late and disturb the tournament that has already started.

I would like for the tournament to just continue as it is set-up now. I do not want to slow down the tournament or interfere with the standings.

But thank you for the offer BobJoeJim
