Also, don't forget that all games are stored at http://ficsgames.com/
You can find anyone's games so long as you know their username at FICS (which is why I keep asking for the names when both players use a different name there than here on 2+2).

YouKnowWho has informed me that his match with RolldUp Trips will not be played, but since both players clearly made an effort to play and just weren't able to find the time, that match will be scored as a 1/2-1/2 draw. That concludes round 1, so here are the pairings for round 2:

The round will last until midnight on Sunday, October 3rd, one week and 4 hours from the time of this post. Hopefully we can get all 10 matches played this time. Good luck to everyone!

Especially I'm angry about me playing 37. ... Qxe4 in last game, when Qh3, Qxh4+ seems to be winning - and I've considered that move...

Yeah I got lucky in pretty much every game

in game 1 Rc1 instead of Bh7 and I am just dead, I was praying that you will be greedy and take on h7 as it gives me a tempo for c5 and I have some little counter play

in game 2 Bxe4 was just horrible by me, black can just play Bxe4 Rxd6 Bxc2 Bxf6 gxf Rxf6 and black should be winning because of queen side majority. I should have played Bxf6 and then Nxf6 Nf5 Qwherever Bxd5 Nxd5 Rxd5 because of the fork on e7.

and of course in game 4 I was just getting mated in the end

Imo, blitz is the best way to learn.

You need to play hundreds of games to get good...can't just use computer/book. Same as in poker imo. Theory is 1 thing, playing is essential for improvement. Why do you think even top GM's play blitz a lot?..

You made some mistakes, so did I... but I think you played really well in the 4th game. gg, and pm me whenever you want another game.

You sir, are not correct Blitz is definitely not the best way to learn, and as a matter of fact it can cause massive problems to your game.

Where did you get the idea that top GM's play blitz "a lot"? Yeah, sometimes maybe, purely for fun. But definitely not A LOT. And they definitely don't use that as a learning experience.. One thing that blitz is good for is getting used to the opening schemes that you are using faster. That's about it

Of course, it is tremendously fun though

Imo, over time, it improves your speed of calculation and intuition.

But only if you understand certain positional concepts.

Bullet does very little for your game, but 3/4/5 minute games put pressure on you and imo they FORCE you to think faster.

Well that's how it works for me, anyway.

I've also watched loads of Kingscrusher's videos on youtube, and they've really helped my understanding of what plays are important and when they're important.

"Timing" of plans is everything, and since (imo) the timing of plans is pronounced in blitz (and so you improve on this when playing lots of blitz games), when it comes to longer games, your thought process is automatically better, faster, and more accurate.

I don't play the three knights normally, its just recently I played it against the Petrov and it worked quite well so I thought I'd give it a spin. But the dutch, thats where I'm in my element.

Seriously? I initiated contact and responded to your first message. And then less than 4 hours after your second PM you post this.

I don't understand your post. But don't worry, I'm replying to your PM right after I post this.

I might take up the petroff, just because there's the beautiful line:

3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.Nc3 Nxc3 6.dxc3 Be7 7.Bf4 Nc6 8.Qd2 Be6 9.0-0-0 Bxa2!!

And black gets at least a draw. This line is given by Rybka 3...

Simply amazing stuff imo.

Only downside would be larning all other variations (lol), in particular 5. d4 is obv more comment than Nc3.

But it is still played at GM level, and so it definitely offers dynamic play for black, so it's probably a better alternative to the Ruy Lopez, which I hate playing with as black.

Do you play mainline Petroff stuff as black?

Where's the draw after 10. b3, and presumably 10...a5 11. Kb2 a4 12. Kxa2 axb3+ 13. Kxb3?

(Since the pic is from chessgames.com, I figured I'd share these games too: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?node=5616374 )

Yep. In theory white has to play accurately to secure the draw.

The idea is indeed Ra5, castling, doubling/tripling (in some lines) on the a-file.

You play d5 in some lines.

Sac the knight and/or bishop in some lines.

E.g. Ra5 Kb2 Qa8 Bc4 d5! Bxc7 0-0 Bxa5 Rxa5 Ne5! Ba3+ Kb1 dxc4 Qa3 Qa6 (advantage to black according to rybka).
A drawing line,for example, is

Ra5 Kb2 Qa8 Bc4 d5 Bxd5 Ba3+ Kb1 Be7 draw by repetition
