Okay, registration is now closed. Sorry I'm 8 hours late, I was asleep. It did give three more people a chance to sneak in to the tourney though, total entrants: 20.

Here are the pairings for round 1:

Please PM your opponent as soon as possible, and schedule a time you can both sign onto FICS and play your games. Remember, you will play a four game match, each game should be a 5 minute blitz game with a 2 second increment. The player listed in the left column as "white" will play white in games 1 and 3, but will be black in games 2 and 4. If you're unfamiliar with FICS, don't worry, it rotates the colors automatically, if you just play a rematch after each game. When your games are concluded, please post the results in this thread. Remember you have ONE WEEK to complete your games. Round 1 concludes on Sunday, September 26th, at midnight my time (Pacific time, GMT-7).

Good luck everyone!

Thanks for letting me play- I thought it would be too late. Of course I will partake, though.

How do we post proof of all our results for each game? Screenshots?

Yeah, I can confirm that your posted results are accurate at ficsgames.com, which is one of the major reasons we play this at FICS. Also, if you did try to lie about results, your opponent could always point it out in the thread, so it wouldn't work well, hehe. I'd like to think that we can all be trusted to play some honest games and then honestly report what happened. I mean it's just a forum tournament for fun, anyway.

Turns out the gambit isn't bad for black at all (at least at low enough ply analysis), though I didn't play it on purpose. And then I played the gambit wrong. Black could have come back with 20...Qxd4, but I did not see it somehow.

Generally I think it was some "technically unsound" play from both of us although I had fun.

Game 1 was weird from the off and should have been over quicker than it was. I hung a piece pretty early on (could have lost before I did anyway) and generally I didn't play with any real plan or structure just random reactive moves. FICS went crazy at one point as well and told me he had -20s on his clock then after he moved it went to 50s which was weird. Sooner i forget that game the better.

Game 2 I got my move order wrong at the end and completely missed that I couldn't play QA5 which was careless (still at least I had a plan this time albeit one that messed up). Qa5 first is probably better but with all the pressure on my own king it'd have been messy. Wins the rook though to ease some pressure (I think?). Other than that, I pretty much handed the center to him on a plate which put me in a bad position before we'd even made 10 moves so yet another back to the wall job. 13.ne5 for black would have been even worse for me than his actual move I think (threat of 14.bb5 needs to be dealt with then afterwards knight can move to outpost on d3 and I just cant defend in time after that).

Game 3 ended up blundering but generally I just gave him too much counterplay I think.

Game 4 nice to get a few tactics in and thought I'd experiement with the tromp which I've not played since I stopped playing years ago.

Anyway, I haven't looked through the games properly yet but those are initial thoughts and anybody that bothered to watch the games will realise I still have a lot of work to do and I think all games were out of book in the first few moves (which isn't necessarily a bad thing at our standard). Tbh, any comments are welcome as long as they are constructive maybe in pm or somewhere else so we dont clutter the tourney thread.

It'd be interesting to have some slower or correspondance games with you at some point ganstaman. Only time I play blitz is in these 2p2 tourneys

Any suggestions for a good interface to use for FICS on a windows machine? I haven't played at FICS for ages (but still play at ICC a bit) & have realised how ordinary Thief is (used to used it for FICS ages ago) when compared to Dasher for ICC.
Obviously I'm really just pre-empting excuses before the tournament ... but it also doubles as a serious question!

Eh, it seems no one else is playing yet, so I don't mind adding a little clutter to make this thread seem more interesting.

I took a quick look at some of the positions with like Rybka 2 or something at low ply and we certainly both have lots of improving to do. But it's not like either of us expected otherwise, and blitz is blitz. Of course, I did have fun too, though.

I do play a lot of 'weird' openings sometimes so leaving book was kinda my fault (makes games fun, and now no one can prepare against me!!). Except for the Tromp, but I don't see that much. It did seem to be your best and most comfortable game.

I've been playing exclusively on gameknot for a while (a turn-based correspondence style type site), and while it has a beta version of unrated blitz capabilities, I've played mostly only slower games there (days per move). I had to play 4 blitz games on FICS once I signed into this tournament to make sure I could still do it. But yeah, I've got the same username on gameknot as here and as on FICS. I've only got one game going there now, so if you or anyone wants to play there ever, I might be accepting challenges based on my schedule.

Nothing wrong with that at all. Discussion of the games played during the tourney are absolutely an improvement of the thread, and I encourage it for anyone who wants to talk about their games. We're here to have fun, and to improve, so sharing our games, talking about them, analyzing them, etcetera, fits perfectly with our goals
