With only tie-breakers left to determine a champion in Open Tourney IV, it's time to begin registration for the LONG OVERDUE Open Tourney V.

This tournament will be swiss system, so that everyone gets to play multiple matches (since there will probably be quite a few new players who need multiple matches to establish a rating baseline, with how long it's been since we started one of these up). The number of rounds is TBD, and depends on the number of entrants. If we have 8-15 entrants, we will play 4 rounds. 16+ and we'll go to 5. Each round will last ONE WEEK ONLY. The deadline to complete your games will be midnight, Sunday, Pacific time (GMT-7). New pairings for the next round will be posted by Noon, Monday, at the latest.

The deadline will be strictly enforced. If you are unable to complete your games within the timeframe, you MUST PM ME WITH AN EXPLANATION, or else you are assumed to forfeit. If both players fail to PM me, it will be scored 0-0. If one player PMs me and the other doesn't, it will be scored 1-0. If both players PM me, it will be scored either 1-0 or 1/2-1/2, depending on whether one player is clearly at fault or not, in the game not being played. Any player who forfeits (and fails to PM me) twice will be removed from the tournament.

Each match will consist of four games, 5'2" increment, to be played on FICS. A 2-2 score will go into the tournament standings as 1/2-1/2. Otherwise, the player scoring higher over the four games will be entered into the tournament standings as 1-0 for that round.

Registration will be open for a week and a half, until midnight on Sunday, September 19. Pairings will be posted immediately when registration closes, and round 1 will begin then. Because of the structure of the forfeit rules, you must know how to use the Private Messaging function of 2p2. Therefore:

TO REGISTER: SEND A PM TO ME, BOBJOEJIM, INFORMING ME OF YOUR FICS SCREENNAME

Please post in this thread, or PM me, if you have any questions. Thank you, and good luck!

Edit: Registration is now closed

Any chance you'll run one of these with a slightly longer time control, say two rapid games? My schedule is too busy to set aside the time only to lose half of my games on time or horrible blunders. I can only 4 table in poker!

cld3, I'll look at doing longer time controls in tourney VI. You're not the only person to request it.

The games will be played on FICS (the Free Internet Chess Server), which is the 2p2 consensus best online chess site that does not require subscription fees.

PM sent to enter, although I second the call for one of these with longer time controls. One game of 20 5 per round, for example, would probably be done in less time than four games of 5 2 on average.

If someone has a 1600 rating on FICS, what would the USCF equivalent be?

It depends on what category they are 1600 in. If blitz, I'd say the USCF rating would be a little higher, something like 1700-1800. If standard I'd say about the same as long as they are under 2000. Above 2000, it's a bit different (higher USCF starts to happen up there somewhere).

This has been my experience being on the server for a long time. Not really scientific.

PM sent, I'm in. Just haven't played on FICS in so long that I've got to do some work to get my password.

Can someone explain the structure to me differently please?

I read this as, 4 games per match, with a 5 foot 2 inch increment to be played on a computer.

Try 5 minutes with a 2 second per move increment ...

Ah got it thanks (I'm a chess noob, easy points here), so each players clock is 5 minutes, and every move you gain 2 seconds on your clock?
