I am not overwhelmed by Backgammon Studio Heroes.

Most tournaments there can only be played when you pay to be a premium member. An exception are the heroes daily tournaments. But yesterday there were 14 heroes daily tournaments and not one of them was finished! So what's the point?

I have no problem with paying to play in a tournament but only when I can win something. Tournaments where I can only lose money (for the premium membership) and not win any don't seem attractive to me.

Am I missing something or is Backgammon Studio Heroes useless regarding tournaments?

I don’t play the tournaments on Heroes. Or at least not the ones that are generated and hosted by the software. You can’t really blame a website for users not sticking around to finish a tournament.

As for the premium membership, $4 a month is an extraordinary value and a minimal contribution to the constant development and maintenance of a platform that provides the user with a reliably good user interface and stable connection, a virtually infinite collection of quizzes and game analyses, a private database of your own games, a private database of your own blunders, the ability to play your own blunders as a quiz, and a variety of game formats that even allow you to view your errors in real time. It’s got everything a backgammon player could ask for to enjoy and improve their game.

Oh yes, I can. Other sites simply kick players that don't stick around. So 100% of the tournaments are finished. 0% is quite laughable.

Analyzing the errors (with software) after the match is useful. But Backgammon Studio Heroes says some comment after nearly every move you make. I found that so annoying and distracting that I planned to investigate how to turn that off. But as there are no reasonable tournaments there anyway I could save that effort.

The audio feedback is optional, depending on the format you elect to play. I prefer it off, myself. I’d rather review my moves after a match rather than during.

Best place to play online is Backgammon Galaxy.

I disagree with Backgammon Galaxy being the best site, especially for those wanting to learn. Backgammon NJ HD is more user friendly. There are learning tools on that site that Galaxy doesn’t provide (get the match analysis package, it’s worth it). The dice are completely random, and the site’s creator is very transparent about the dice algorithm that is used, unlike Galaxy. Btw, why doesn’t Galaxy let you play vs the computer? I’ve played thousands of games on both sites, and am a decent player. Just go to the App Store to find it.

If you want an app and just want to play,
I don't like Zynga but their app is the easiest to use. Lots of players. Bad players and good. The playing interface and board looks nice and plays nice. Added bonus is that you will learn to curse in turkish eventually.

Backgammon Galaxy has an app as well but the site is geared towards players better than me and the app interface is not up to Zynga ease of use when it comes to playing. It has a player base but only if you enjoy and can play fast.
It is fantastic for learning to be a better player though and has a web-interface as well etc. All the trimmings for getting used to live competitive backgammon.
