Hello!

White is leading 3:1 in a 5 point match but Black is leading 25 in the pip count. Where should White move the 6?

Instinctively I would play B/22/16, even though Black could hit you with half his rolls.

I’m not sure about your instinct, uberkuber. White is way behind in the race, is not in much immediate danger of being infected hit if he leaves the back checker on the 22 point, and leaving it there gives him a better chance of hitting an outfield blot. My instinct (which may be wrong) would be to enter with the 3 and leave it there. That leaves 13/7 or 7/1. I would love to make the bar point in preparation for a hit, but the resulting blot in the 13 seems too vulnerable. Again my instinct may be wrong and I do not like burying the checker on the ace point, but I lean toward 7/1 with the 6.

Thank you. So the first votes are:

22/16: 1 vote
7/1: 1 vote
13/7: 0 votes

In a chouette this position might lead to an interesting discussion.

I come out just because we need a spare checker to play with. If we play 7/1 we don’t really have anything productive to do on the next roll (or most future rolls really). Best to do it now when he has the blot on the ace point and our board is strong (only 44 and 43 hit and cover so we usually get a return shot if hit).

Extreme Gammon says you are right. 22/16 is best. 7/1 is not even second place but shockingly the worst of all.

I knew the "pay now - pay later" concept to risk something as long as the opponent has a blot in his homeboard. But I always thought this only applies when I am ahead in the race. Thanks to you I learned something new.

I'm not in love with 22/16 for the record, but I thought the other alternatives were even worse.

It's not just about paying now vs later, it's also about the severely decreased mobility by putting the bar point checker on your ace point. Maintaining mobility, flexibility, and maximum board strength are of paramount importance in a holding game.
