I have some experience in backgammon but now really would want to learn to play by playing with a program that suggest the best move possible for every situation.
Is the GNU Backgammon best way to do this?

eXtreme Gammon. Unmatched. For 59.95$. Snowie is a king in exile, far to much bucks to drive only a ford edsel. Forget GNU. F... Interface.

What's more important is your practicing methods and habits.

Learning to play "optimally" takes a lot of time, patience, learning, playing against bot, reading books and articles, watching videos, playing against humans, etc.
