Value of Olsen's "Value Equation" Value of Olsen's "Value Equation"

I'm currently reading Marc Brockmann Olsen's "Backgammon: From Basics To Badass". He devotes one section to what he calls the value equation:

V = P + B + R + C

where V is the total value of the position, P is the relative (player's - opponent's) "prime value" of the position, B is the relative blitz value, R is the relative race value, and C is the relative contact value (which, I think, is the value of being able to hit a late shot in something like a holding or back game)

He does his sums for various positions and reaches conclusions about what play to make or what the cube action is.

After googling around, I can find virtually no references on the web to this kind of analysis. It's as if the backgammon world has responded to this idea with a collective "meh". I know I'd find it hard to use in practice given the difficulty in estimating the values, but I'm a newbie.

Has anyone found this idea useful? Is there anything to be gleaned here other than the general advice to think about priming, blitzing, etc. from both players' POV?

These are definitely the right concepts to be think about when evaluating a position, but I've never heard of actually assigning numerical values to these over the board. The best part of using it, I guess, is that you will be less likely to forget about any of those concepts when evaluating. But I feel that using actual numerical values would be at most be a crutch to rely on for less experienced players (compare: "high card points" in bridge, but probably a lot worse), and for it to be useful, the author would have to provide a lot of examples and guidelines on how to assign the values.

In a vague sense it's OK, since your winning chances are related to the possibility of winning in different ways (hitting a shot, winning the race, etc.). But assigning actual numerical values to these things and using those in some calculation? Nobody thinks that way.
