Unusual backgammon board? Unusual backgammon board?

Hi I'm currently working on conserving a chess/back gammon board. It is mostly typical apart from the small ivory circles around the edge of the back gammon side which have wholes going to 20mm depth. Can anyone tell if these are a part of a different game or the same. I haven't been able to find anything similar online and casual back gammon players I know have not come accross this before.

They may have been used to keep score ; note there are 10 such holes on each side, not 12.

Possibly in a similar (undocumented) way as the "peg board" shown around the middle of this page.

This looks like it may be a tric trac board. Tric trac is a French game played on a backgammon-like board but with quite intricate rules for scoring. See https://www.bkgm.com/variants/Trictrac.html and scroll down to the section “Marking the score.”
