Hello,

I am curious to hear what should be a correct training and how much time in proportion we should devote to playing, analyzing, reading, etc.
Until now, i read carefully "backgammon for badass" from olsen one year ago when i started, and mainly have played (since one year), also analyzing each match i did and review blunders.

With time, i consider diminucing time playing. Analyzing seems important so no change for this, but maybe that playing less and reading more (or studying) should be more useful, because i know that in my games, maybe 30-50 % of the best moves are easy to find and there are no values in itself (except maybe still working visualisation ?), maybe that is a loss of time.

Generally, i am curious to hear what strong player (maybe more than 2600 on galaxy ?) would say to themselves when they still were intermediate players, some years ago.

I get recently 2200 only as i said by reading olsen and playing. I consider reading books again, reading forums, strategy articles on internet and also watching some streams (i hear many players advicing that is important to hear different ideas and thought process). I am curious to know what about your opinions.

I'm about the same rating as you, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I've had very good results using spaced repetition software (I like Anki) for most of my backgammon study.

Every time I make a blunder on Galaxy I take a screenshot and make a flashcard in the app (which takes maybe 10 seconds), and I'll get quizzed on that card (with exponentially increasing spacing between reviews f I continue to get it right -- it starts at 1 day and I have some at >1 year) and remember it forever. If you keep getting it wrong, it will keep asking every day and eventually it will stick, vs when I was compiling a blunder database they mostly sat there and I never really remembered most of them. It works for anything, e.g., if I want to memorize a certain number (match equity or takepoint or gammon value or whatever), I make a card. If I hear someone mention a thought process I like, I make a card. It currently takes ~30 min per day to review all the cards I have scheduled, but of course this is proportional to how many cards you make per day.

Hello,

That's interesting, i also since the beginning i play take screenshots and classify blunders by thematics/folders. Last time i just review my blunders without screenshots and annotations, things i always did before.
To be honest, i rarely review the big data i created, but i guess the process of reviewing is still important.

That's a great idea, i will do this to try a little bit (the flashcards) ! Maybe more fun, and it's important to test you as metacognition seems to learn us...
