Relatively minor point, but it puzzles me:

Why am I moving into range, so to speak, instead of using the 1 to move 23/22?

Getting hit here costs you very little. Blue has no board, you're way behind in the race already, and you might establish a second point in his board if you get hit. After 13/10, you're not actually hoping to get hit, but the downside is very small.

You also want your third checker as far back as possible, so having him on the 23-point is better than on the 22-point. Blue will need to dump checkers in his board with some rolls (now and in the future) so the further back you are, the harder this will be.

Nicely said. Advancing the rear checker is worse than whatever small downside accompanies playing off the midpoint.

I have not checked, but it may be that when your opponent rolls a 6, you would rather be hit than not. You can verify this by seeing how rolls such as 65 play when the 6 is played first versus when the 5 is played first.

Frustratingly obvious when it is pointed out.

Thank you.
