And if so, is this universally recognized? I had a position where this mattered yesterday and I realized I didn’t know the rule. I don’t see anything about this in eg the USBGF tournament rules so thought I would ask here.

As soon as you have at least 1 checker off, you would at worst lose a single game (times the doubling cube value).
So, no gammon nor backgammon in this case.
