In addition to obviously immediately losing when the opponent rolls 53 (which I think mostly explains this one), imagine how unhappy you’ll be if he just enters with any other 5 and now you have to clear the 11 point (6 away from the anchor so you only get a few immediate clearing numbers). Solving the problem of clearing the 11 pt now with 11/7(2) (as well as avoiding the immediate game losing shots) is worth the downside of not making the 4 pt.

I would coin it not counterintuitive but breaking an important rule of thumb, "making the 5 is never wrong" in this case.
I probably would have made the 5 without hesitation OTB. If I hesitated I might have seen that when running works your opponent has quite a challenge to come up with some initative to avoid a cube.

BTW if you additionally paste the XGID it's easier to look at the position with a bot.

A very reliable rule of thumb I’ve found is that if you have one man back that doesn’t “see daylight” (i.e., you can’t hop the opponent’s prime with a 6), if you roll a number that lets you run to the outfield you need a very good reason not to make that play. Here as you can see this is even more urgent than making the 5 point.

Another beautiful one (please hide the left part if you dont wanna see the answer).

Answer comment : At 7-7a, both moves are border. Even at this score, Equity without cube is the same. Here due to match score and cube centered, you want to reduce Opponent Gammon and the efficacity of his cube action next turn. Wonderful one !
