Been playing very long cash sessions of that form of backgammon where all your pieces start off of the board and come on. No hitting which at first really put me off, but it's actually a very interesting game and the opponent is pretty weak. Control of the 5 and 6 points on both sides of the board is obviously crucial, as is building primes as quickly as possible, but was wondering if anyone here has any other tips on the game?

What's the name of that variation Wamy? I think I've played it before but I'm not sure if it is the same game based on your description. When you hit, you trap your opponent's checker?

Not sure of name - sorry.

There is no hitting. Making a point with a single piece blocks movement. You can only add one piece from off the board per turn (so usually have forced moves elsewhere on the board). Doubles count as usual.

Nah its def not acey-ducey. Can hit in that as well as play two from the stack in a turn (and the 2-1 roll is wild).

Won a match to 11 in 3 games with 3 backgammons. The last one was a standard desperation backgammon, but I'm not sure I've ever even backgammoned 2 non-desperation games in a row before.

Re: ***Official backgammon BBV/LC thread ***

Just got back from Turkey where out of the blue saw a small shop selling backgammon accessories and found some really nice heavy plastic checkers to replace the terrible wooden ones I got with my arabic wooden board many moons ago:

Still makes a hell of a racket every roll of the dice but there is something very satisfying about the heavy clacking of wood on thick, dense plastic which is keeping me smiling so far

Acey-Ducey is one of the most brutal games in the world. I play similar to the Euro varient.

I used to play with my HS science teacher every day and he would always win. I literally won one game a year, for four years.

Went back recently to give a talk to current students (about my work), and hunted him down for a rematch. Me thinking I'm hot stuff, and yet he completely owns me.

He had me on the bar, about to gammon me, one of his pips left on the board. I roll the miracle double to both hit him and get off the bar. I make an end run, and get down to MY last pip... when he hits HIS miracle double to knock me off and win in one fell swoop.

Yeah its a truly savage game. Can't imagine how bad it would be if the cube got involved for a decent sum - could easily see it getting turned six or seven times a game if not more.

Cube isn't involved for exactly that reason; too much variance. Instead you pay for pips left on the board, which can still be pretty incredible. if it was a cube game few would double/accept because of fear of situations like the above.

I guess that because of the incredible swings, dropping a cube would rarely be correct.

Yeah this is how we score Nardi when I play with the Ukranians with a few subtle variations. Pieces left in first quarter count as one, second quarter two, thrid quarter three and so on. Can be very brutal if you get a six prime built at the right time and really make them waste rolls for long periods.

GNU of all things. G1 was a doubled blitz where he wound up with 3 in the air and kept fanning at the end. G2 I missed a cube and got in a too-good 1-point game, he had one man left back and hit his shot and left me 3 stacked on the 2. He had a 5-point board with a blot, I decided to wait to double to give myself a shot to luckbox a gammon, and ended up jokering 2 guys on the entry, rolling 55 picking up one more, and then getting the last 2 guys off. G3 was a 1-4 backgame where he never hit a shot, and obviously he never clears the 1-point at 2-away when he gets gammoned ~100%, and I rolled off cleanly for the 3rd.

Ha ha yeah I have to sit really close. It really doesn't bother me that much because you can only ever tell it seems on a blue or green solid background so it really doesn't affect much. I always like to add low content if I can.

Bill, can you sticky this thread, that way it will get used and people won't feel the need to start new threads that are unlikely to get any/many responses.

Back in October 2010, Zoe Cunningham mentioned that her company has been doing some filming of backgammon events such as the Nordic Open and London Open.

A 30 minute video of the 2011 London Open has been released. I would like to thank Zoe and the crew for all they do for promoting backgammon.

Disclaimer: I have no association with Zoe, her company, or any of the European tournaments.
