I'd say Backgammon Boot Camp by Walter Trice which is a little more advanced than Magriel's book, has a lot more on cube action, and has the benefits of neural net analysis.
Then Modern Backgammon by Bill...just received this last week, am about half way through, and it is excellent. Clearly explains the underlying principles of the game based on the neural nets. Also has an extensive problem section and a 17-game match with analysis between Nack Ballard and Jerry Grandell. Definitely one to read and re-read.
