I am having trouble with when to double and when to take.

White - Pips 119

Black - Pips 148
White doubles. Take or Pass?

I would take and often times, I would not double. Two huge mistakes. Need some rationale. Thanks.

You need to post this as a diagram.

I say double/pass. The key is white's racing lead. White is a favorite to escape his back man, after which black has one man back in a losing race. Also white can win a fair number of gammons if he hits.

One good way to determine the cube action is Race, Position and Threat. Joe Sylvester said if you have 2 out of 3 double and you need one out of 3 to take.
White is up in the race 29 pips before the roll. Meaning even if Black rolled 66 he/she would still be behind in the race. Position - here White has a 3 point board with 11 checkers in the zone. Threat - White either points on the blot in his/her board or hits loose or hits in the outfield. So that is 3 out of 3 so Black should let this one go.

i'd pass if i was black. this position looks better than it is. look closely and black doesn't have lots of great rolls, the tall stack on his 6pt is a problem.
