This position came up, and doubling was the last thing on my mind. After playing the position a few times from here, it is very clearly the correct move; in 5 replays from here I won 4, one with a backgammon, and 2 gammons. Is the reason this is such an attractive double the fact that he has pips lying all over the show to clean up, or am I missing something else?

I'm guessing without the big stack on the 8 it would be too good/pass, and OTB I can't say I wouldn't probably be mulling over carrying on here.

Yeah we have 2 behind a four prime, but we also have a very real chance of getting 3+ men in the sky which has enormous value. 33/44/54/55 are all utterly lethal, and any 4/5/8 and 66/22 all put us firmly in the drivers seat - more than enough to get the cube turning again.

In '501' I dubbed these position 'Action Doubles'. You're doubling not because your structure is so strong but because you're threatening to pick up a lot of blots and gammon your opponent. You have to redouble now because the position can be a massive pass next turn.

If you're a poker player, think of these positions as the backgammon equivalent of a semi-bluff.
