Is losing with low ER normal? Is losing with low ER normal?

Playing backgammon nj on expert mode and time to time I'll win a game every then and now. Most of the time I'll lose. What I find interesting though is that sometimes I'll lose a game and my error rate will be surprisingly low around 3 - 5 er. Is this normal? Im guessing being that the ai has a zero er it would make sense.

Also how do you calculate the percentage rate of a player's skill level above/below another? Can this be easily calculated by error rate; such as 1 er = 5%?

If your error rate were zero, then you'd be 50/50 to win.

It's often the case when you lose a game that many of your moves are forced, as when you're entering from the bar or dancing. When you win a game, you're not on the bar as much, and you're making many real decisions with some mistakes. Over time, you should have a noticeably lower error rate in your losing games than your winning games.

The solution is to evaluate yourself over samples of 10-20 games. Each group will have a mixture of winning and losing games and you'll get a more consistent evaluation.

I've had to learn to remove "normal" from my backgammon vernacular. But yes, you can lose with a low error rate, notwithstanding what is normal. If your dice are bad, and his/it's are good, you can lose with a -0- error rate. That's backgammon.

But NJ HD is another story altogether. I've played all the iOS backgammon apps and can't find one that......I enjoy. Not to be provocative, but from my years of experience, eXtreme Gammon for the PC is the only way to go.

I've also won matches with high error ratings before. Most commonly, it's because there's atleast one game in a match where I had to play a total back game (every single checker gets sent back). I have GNU set at 2 ply for analysis and for an engine, watching someone break the 6 point to leave more blots in the home board is just plain wrong.

perfectly normal. But improve on your strategies so you won't have to get used to it
