I stopped playing for money because the rake was too high, still looking for somewhere to play online.

Do any of you know of any good backgammon leagues/ladders with good players?

There are several active tournament groups that play online. Check out Gammon Zone, Warp Gammon, and League of Champions. Gammonzone also host sit and go tournaments on Safe Harbor Games. If you go to SHG you will see there are several other groups doing tournaments as well but most of them are playing in the red dice room. Avoid the rooms marked with red dice, the dice in those rooms only produce 9.2% doubles. (There is a long story to that, but the yellow dice room are correct and are where the serious players play).

Most of the groups I mentioned allow play on other servers for their online tournaments, but there is a fairly nice community of players at SHG. Grid Gammon has the most top players, but you have to get someone with a little pull to get you an invite to that. I know that Stick does that for people that frequent BG Online. GG does not have as many tournaments but you can get a lot of pick games, and some tournament play. Tournaments are often limited to players with certain ratings, so it may take a while to develop a rating there.
