I jus got my copy of Magriel´s Backgammon. Now I have all the tools to be successful at backgammon.

Backgammon is a complex game. I try to read every day a couple of pages of Magriel´s "Backgammon". It is a well written book. I hope to be a decent player.

I think that the "Mental shift method" described by Magriel is the easiest and best method to count pips.

It's 25 pips, actually. One pip to get in to the 24-point, then 24 more pips to get off. You also want to adjust for the probability that you actually get in, which depends on your opponent's inner board.

Hint: If someone has a checker on the bar, there are only a handful of positions where the pip count will affect a cube decision. You'll mostly be doing pip counts in races and holding games, where no one is on the bar.

I am reading the chapter "Priming games" of "501 essential backgammon problems". I am enjoying the book. It is well written and the explanations are lucid. I aim to be a decent payer. Backgammon is fun!
