Short answer: Since your gammon values are depressed, you should be less inclined to play for gammons. I don't think you win enough gammons in 5-6 game stretches to make it worth chasing a gammon to increase future gammon values.
Longer answer: Since your gammons values are down, your friend should be taking more often because getting gammoned doesn't hurt as much. This seems to imply that you should double later than usual, which means that many double-drop positions will actually be double-takes. I suspect you're both making many more/larger mistakes that you both realize here.
