I was just playing in Tutor Mode and I doubled. GNU said I ought not do that. I did it, anyway. GNU passed. It was not one of those "too good to double" things.

??????????????

There are many times that I don't like GNU's suggestions and I do it my way and come out ahead. There are many times that I have tried it's suggestions and immediately get stomped into the dirt. Yeah, I know "chance of the dice" and all that, but there are too many times that GNU defies the odds in extreme ways, but that's for another thread. There have probably been threads about that, anyway.

Scroll down a little ways. There's a thread called "Please help me understand the 'Too good to double' concept."

My take is that it means you shouldn't double if you have a good chance at winning a gammon, because it will pass, costing you the extra points.

Is GNU's play based on the same level of analysis as the tutor? If you have GNU playing at 0-ply (or 2-ply or 4-ply) and the tutor set to 3-ply, then you will find situations like this.

I have everything set at Grandmaster, 3-ply.
I could be wrong about it not being a "too good to double" position. I didn't read it's explanation, but it CERTAINLY DID NOT look like I had a huge advantage, and the prospects of a gammon looked nil.

Just screen cap the spots and post them and I'm sure answers can be found.
