Anyone have any info on what this giant of backgammon is up to nowadays? I had the pleasure of playing him a few times on Gamesgrid before he dropped off the radar. One of my backgammon heroes for sure.

I know Jerry Grandell spent some years in Rio (late 90s - early 2000s) playing high-stakes backgammon down there. Since then I've never heard of anyone having contact with him.

Thank you Bill. I'm rather saddened to hear this, the guy was awesome, playing with error rates of 3.0 ish in the 1990s, geez. I only hope he is happy and well and has not gone all 'Bobby Fisher' on us.

Bill, when you say "high stakes backgammon in Rio" or people say "Gus Hansen ignored day 2 of an EPT to play high stakes backgammon" what kind of stakes are they playing for? In your estimation how many people are out there making 6 (7?) figures a year playing?

After watching Mochy vs Ueda for 5k Euro championship as top guys out there, where's all this big action coming from?

High stakes back when Jerry was playing were $100-$200 a point. That's still a high-stakes game today. It used to be commonplace to see games at those stakes in tournaments, but now they're between individuals or in private clubs.
