Hi everybody,

a friend of mine has a MacOS10.4 computer and would like a program like gnubg on the computer. But alas gnu can only be downloaded form 10.5 and beyond. Is there an alternative, maybe another free backgammon program of reasonable strength downloadable?

I do not know if this would work. And it actually asumes your friend is a programmer.
It might be possible to install gcc (gnu's c compiler). Get the gnubackgammon source code. And then tweak the code to run on 10.4
I am not even sure if gnubg is even written in c. But since it is gnu, the source code will be available and some recompiling might be possible.
Just ignore this if you are you friend don't understand anything I just wrote

If you scroll down to the posts by mdpetch it looks like he's written some stuff to get it to work on 10.4. It looks like a giant pain in the ass and I don't even know if it will still work.

Hi 409..., and Falcon,

thanks for your replies, but as you suggested it's all to complicated for me, and probably even more for my friend. It doesn't have to be gnubg, it may be another good and free backgammon program. Any other suggestions maybe?

Or anyone else?

The easiest solution is to upgrade to OSX 10.5.

Hi Mr. Barbegris,

I Myself have a Windows OS, and in my case that would mean i'd have to buy a new expensive upgrade. Isn't that the same for my friend with her MacOS? In that case it would be an easy but costly solution. In which case I should rephrase my question: I am looking for an easy AND free solution !

At the online Apple store an upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard (couldn't find an upgrade to 10.5) is 29 dollars. Not free, but not real expensive. And I found 10.5 to be much snappier than 10.4, with a richer feature set, well worth the price.
