early backgame hit? early backgame hit?

In this backgame, I have an opportunity to hit early (23/16*) but I also have a reasonable move that continues developing the backgame, 13/7 6/5. I chose to hit and it was totally wrong. Is it generally wrong to make these kinds of early backgame hits?

My novice take on this backgame position :
- If you hit now, you lose your timing (which looks decent here being ~80 pips behind).
- with that 23 backgame, you will likely have other chances to hit...
- ... and when you do, you will hopefully fully have improved your board and/or prime!

Hitting just puts you in a middle game position where you're way behind in the race and your opponent has a much stronger board. Not hitting gives you a well-timed backgame where you're just a slight underdog.

Your mistake was not looking at the position after the hit and asking "Who's winning here and by how much?"
