A few times vs GNU in cash games I've been in positions were it's a clear double pass, but when I look at equities it says that not doubling is only very slightly worse then just cashing a single game. I don't understand this, since it's money play so you can't play on for G when it's center cube. what's the merit of not doubling those spots?

If it's a big pass now, and you for some reason don't double, it will almost always be a pass next turn as well. GNU is probably comparing cashing now (equity = 1 point/game) with not doubling now followed by cashing next turn (equity = a little less than 1 point/game). If you want, post a position and we can take a closer look.

I use GNU on mac. For some reason I can't paste a position from GNU unto BGDiagram.com. Might be an issue with Mac? I asked my roommate who's actually a computer science major and has worked with Linux a ton and he couldn't do it either, LOL! It's a shame cuz I get into so many weird spots with GNU that could be fun discussing.

I don't know if you can extract a jpeg from the Gnu pos, but you could also make a screenshot of the pos.

Or alternatively, just post the Gnu position ID and we can post the diagram for you. :-)

thanks for the suggestions, guys.

under edit I have a few options: there's "copy to clipboard" and under that there's GNUbg ID Match ID and Position ID.

then there's the "Copy as" option, and under that I can do "Position as ASCII" and "HTML"

which one do I use to post the ID on here. Thanks for the help. It will help my game a ton if I can post positions on here. Not to mention how fun it is.

GNUbg Position ID.

You can copy and paste it.

Be sure to grab both the GnuBg Position ID and Match ID. In GnuBg, all you have to do is press Ctrl+C. Next, switch over to the TwoPlusTwo message window and press Ctrl+V to paste. Here is an example of what you get:

Position ID: 7L4PAADa/Q4AAA
Match ID: cAkAAAAAAAAE

(That's the position SaurusDNA posted in another thread.)

No problem. You'll just have to use the menus.

In GnuBg, select Edit > Copy ID to Clipboard > GNUbg ID, switch over to the TwoPlusTwo message window, and paste.

That would work. In case you do not already have a favorite image hosting site, I'd like to recommend postimage.org. Theirs is a free, anonymous, and “permanent” service. I put the last in quotes because, well, I have seen a lot of web sites come and go!

Something else worth trying is the GnuBg command Edit > Copy as > Position as ASCII. Paste the result into TextEdit or a similar program. You can copy the GnuBg ID from there. You can also paste the result inside CODE tags here at TwoPlusTwo. Those are the tags you get when you click the # above the editing window.

I am unfamiliar with the Mac version of GnuBg, but considering the difficulties you are having, I recommend checking to see whether there is a newer version. The whole thing looks a little bit technical, so if you can get your roommate to help out, you may find the process easier. According to the GNU Backgammon web site, you must have the latest version of X11/Xquartz installed under certain versions of OSX.

What version of GNUBG are you using? (You can find out from Help menu/About GNU Backgammon/Build Info. The version is on the top line of the dialog box.

I can tell what version of OS/X and your processor if you go to the Applications folder and launch the Terminal application. At a command prompt issue this command:

uname -a

There are some peculiarities with the way OS/X X11 works. To copy a GNUBGid (position and matchid) to the clipboard you can click Control-c in GNUBG, however to paste it into another OSX window you have to use Command Key-v (not Control-v). Command Key is the same as the Apple Key. This applies to the board diagrams as well. You should be able to do Edit Menu/Copy As/Position as Ascii . Doing that should put it into the clipboard. To paste into another OSX Application (like a web browser) use Command Key-V
