Cube Question Cube Question

This may seem silly but I have to ask this. Okay, I understand that when you present the cube to your opponent and then take your hand away, then it's in play and you can't take it back. But what about if you pick up the cube and hold on to it while you are thinking about doubling? Do you have to offer it once you pick it up?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Rick

I've been told that once you touch it, it must be offered on the grounds that observing your opponent's reaction while you grab it could be a form of gamesmanship.

This likely varies from club to club, chouette to chouette though.

The general rule at tournaments is that if you pick up the cube, you're doubling. Don't pick up the cube until you've figured out if you're doubling or not.

I had an incident myself (long ago) where my opponent picked up the cube and started to offer it to me. As I went to take it, he put it back on the side and said "I just wanted to see if you would pass, ha ha." I called the director and he was required to double.

That little trick would be what some might call "bull feces," or something similar to that.
