Cube action? Why?

First I must admit that I actually have no clue whatsoever. I'm only answering as this looks like a great position for me to learn and i'd love to know the answer.

My guess:

Double / drop.

I would think we have enough play in home board to get a couple of throws to try and get a 6. We could even be in a situation of moving our gap safely forward, still leaving him only one number to come out on, buying us even more time. The fact that a 6 for us also hits another guy has also got to swing things even more in our favor.

There must be a handy sum that applies here. Very interested to see the correct answer.

I think it is double take, based solely on a similar position that appeared recently. This position is a little different, which makes me wonder if the take is correct, but without a 6 black is going to be offering up shots in short order. Another factor that makes me even more dubious of the take is the open blot on white's 7 point - if the 6 does come for white, the gammon starts looking a little ominous.

I think you are talking about this thread.

Basically what you said. In the position above, the doubler has much fewer spares, but when he gets his 6, gammons go way up (whereas there were virtually none in the linked position). Still, I think white easily has the extra win per two gammons.

Meanwhile black only throws a 6 11/36 times, and after two or more failures recubes could become strong. No double for me.

Scary at first glance, but looks like a relatively easy take.

I would hold off the cube I think.

This was a position I faced while playing against XG - I didn't double, and it hit me with a double blunder. The correct cube action is double/drop. I don't have access to XG at the moment, but will post GNU analysis a bit later.

+2 for Kamba.

Peach - the position you linked to is exactly the same concept as in this position. Bill explained the math and rationale for the cube action in that position very clearly, and the same considerations apply here.
