Two problems, same position:

a) black to play 31
b) black to play 32

While it's true that 8/4 in a) and 8/3 in b) send a checker out of play, and the correct plays (8/5 6/5 and 8/5 6/4 respectively) do not, shouldn't that be irrelevent when we're this far ahead in the race?

The correct play for b I find exspecially perplexing as it breaks black's best home-board point-- something I imagine black will need if he hits one of white's checkers, rather than giving white a double shot from the bar.

In (b) 8/3 is obviously better, for the reasons you gave.

You should at least entertain the possibility that a GNU recommendation is not the same thing as 'correct'.

I'm not sure what your settings are. But my GNU has 8/5 6/5 and 8/3, which is right.

Wierd... I seem to be getting 8/3 now for b. Oh well, it's entirely possible I screwed something up in GNU the first time when I changed the dice roll.... sorry for the confusion!

In any event, I'm still not sure I totally understand what's wrong with 8/4 in a) ... or at least, it's not clear to me what significant benefit I must be gaining for giving up the 6pt.

I double checked with a rollout, and it does seem that 8/5 6/5 is right, both at this match score & cube position (2 all to 7 points, black owns the 2 cube) and for a cash game...

In (a), there is a very significant edge for playing 8/5 6/5 over 8/4. There are many more variations where you remake a 6-point board immediately or in the near future. After 8/4 remaking a full board is very hard.

Lesson: don't kill checkers if you don't have to.
