i learned a rule of thumb that says you should play safe when breaking up a closed board with opp. on the bar if you are leading by three crossovers or more.
does going from the bar to your opponent's innerboard count as one crossover?

Why do crossovers matter? Surely, apart from the final crossover into your home, they are just aesthetic? Why isn't pip count the final determinant?
