Confusion about the free drop Confusion about the free drop

In the following position, I was leading 4-1 in a match to 5, i.e. I was 1 away and my opponent was 4 away (post Crawford). My opponent forgot to double at their first opportunity, but doubled at their second. Since I was behind in game, and I believed I had a free drop, I chose to drop the double. Surprisingly, however, this was a big error (-0.122)!

Can someone explain what is going here? I understand that there are exceptions to the free drop rule since you might prefer to save your free drop for later. However, I thought that these exceptions were minor and couldn't generate such a sizeable error when you are trailing 47.8% in the game.

The fact that you get gammoned less than average matters because it's 4-away and not 2-away. I discuss it a little more here:

The key is your anchor on the 21-point. If you alter the position in any way (anchor back on the 22, or back men split) then it's a massive pass. But an anchor on the 21 is enough to make you save your free drop for the next game.
