The Championship Division featured a strong field that included Backgammon Giants Petko Kostadinov, Steve Sax, Victor Ashkenazi, Paul Weaver, Ray Fogerlund, and Ed O'Laughlin. From the second-tier giants list (ranks 33-64), several other prominent players appeared: Mary Hickey, Phil Simborg, and Alfred Mamlet.

One round 5 match worthy of note was played between Petko Kostadinov and Mary Hickey. Petko's PR was 1.81. Mary turned an impressive 1.44. In the finals, Paul Weaver faced off against Dennis Culpepper, and defeated him to win the championship.
