Are there any guidelines as to how much you are prepared to break your board, or not, in order to avoid giving your opponant a direct shot when trying to safely bear in your last checkers ?

Here is a sample position, however my question is more in general terms rather than
this setup:

White has a checker off in this position, which must be a mistake. Where the checker actually is will probably have a big effect on the pip count and how you play the roll.

hoping for some general guidence for this type of play rather than this exact
position.

There are a lot of things going on, and there aren't simple heuristics that can answer all the questions. You're often asking questions about whether things are getting better or worse for you if you wait to break compared to running now. This is related to where you are in the race and what's happening on the individual boards. Sometimes, you want to leave earlier before your opponent's board is put together, and other times you want to wait for him to crunch his board so that even if you're hit he's unlikely to contain you.

And that doesn't even take into consideration how you can leverage the cube in these situations.
