Can someone help me understand, in general, when you should break an andvanced anchor early?

In this situation, why is it good to break the defensive 21 point in order to make his 15 point?

Neither side has any inner board, so it's okay to anchor in the outfield and not be concerned with leaving a blot on white's four point. You can break the anchor early, primarily because white's board is no threat. If white held the five and three points, then black should stay. There's nothing wrong with slotting black's four point here either.

Thanks for the explanation.

My actual move at the time was 20/11, but this is apparently quite wrong. My thought was to tempt white to break his strong defensive formation with a loose hit, giving me flexibility to attack and/or develop a priming game while simultaneously mainting pressure on his side of the board with a checker back (plus the anchor of course). I thought I was making a very flexible play!

What might the error be in this thinking?

White doesn't mind breaking one of those anchors to hit when you have no inner board developed. Make a couple of points behind white's anchors before leaving loose shots if possible. White is a favorite to hit after playing 20/11, and you have only 5-5 or a two that isn't 6-2 to hit back. White will hit if possible because you would go from being ahead in the race to behind. With 21/16, 20/16 you establish a block in white's outfield which can become quite valuable after you have made some sort of home board.
