I have pretty much mastered the opening rolls, but sometimes struggle to find the correct reply when my opponent makes them, especially when I roll doubles. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I found what looks like a very good article by Jeremy Bagai http://www.fortuitouspress.com/replies but I am not sure how old this is and I know strategy has changed in modern times.

He also refers you to a app called Flashback, is this any good in modern backgammon?

Any help would be appreciated.

There's a book out called "How to Play the Opening in BG, Part 1" which has a 45-page chapter about the replies to the opening rolls and why the best plays are best. Might be worth a look.

The Bagai article (and his app) are in line with current knowledge, as far as I have seen. I did buy the flashback app but didn’t find it much help for learning, although it does document the dozen or so exceptions to JB’s rules which aren’t included in the article (that said, I could have deduced them myself I suppose, eg with the help of http://www.extremegammon.com/Openingbook.aspx).

I also have Bill’s book which contains much more detail on the reasoning behind the replies (JB has very little of that; his aim is slightly different).

I like the Extremegammon opening relies but cannot understand some of the results.

For example the best move is usually first but the second move often has a higher percentage of winning like the one above. Can anyone explain?

The difference in the winning chances is less than 1%. But after the second move the opponent has more than 2% higher gammon chances !!!
