I think the tactics thing is probably important, but also strategically White’s plan here (since he’s far behind in the race) is to keep as much contact as possible, i.e., keep his furthest back checkers as far back as possible. And 4/3(2) seems to reduce contact less than 12/11(2). The XG play is about maximizing the probability of hitting a shot in exchange for slightly weakening our board with 4/3(2), but since that won’t matter until we hit the shot it’s a good trade.
