Hi all,

I'm looking for a backgammon app for iphone 5s with the possibility to play turn based games/tournaments with the cube. NOT against bots and NOT real-time play: just a turn based program.

The cube is obv needed: I downloaded some similar apps but they play always 1-point matches...

Thanks

Not an app, but Dailygammon has all your other requirements. Deep into tournaments, you will find players that can play to a 4 to 7 PR in a 21 point matches.

Our app, Backgammon NJ for iOS, has the functionality you're looking for. It supports turn-based matches up to 25 points with cube against human players (random or friends). However, note that for BGNJ, turn-based play isn't as popular as real-time play. There are only about 80-90 players who play turn-based on a daily basis. It's more difficult to find a turn-based match than a real-time match, where there are many more daily players (600-700). Also, the longer the match length that you select, the longer it will take to find a match because there are less players looking for longer matches.

I have to say that backgammon NJ was exactly what I was looking for. I found quickly some opponents, the cube is ok, really gg. Worth 5$.

We're glad it's working out for you! A few tips:
  • If you set the "Double Tap on Status Meter" or "Swipe Left on Status Meter" options to "Next Turn-based match", it allows you to advance through matches that are on your turn more quickly. You'll need to complete your turn before proceeding to the next match.
  • If a non-Friend opponent hasn't moved in over 7 days, the match will automatically end when you view it (with partial Elo calculated). If you don't open the match up and view it, it won't end.
  • You can play up to 30 turn-based matches at once, although the number can change (it has increased in the past), as the limit is controlled by Apple. Last we checked, it was 30.

Please let us know if you have any questions about how turn-based works in our app.

Actually there's one thing.

It's the design of the backgammon board. The shape (used by other applications) either of checkers and points is a little anti-aesthetic for such a good app. Try to imitate XG mobile board, that's really pleasant and beautiful, and more professional.

Another thing: is there the possibility to drag the checkers?

Thanks.

We assume that you prefer the board to have a smaller width to height ratio? In general, we've designed our boards to fill the entire screen of each device. We've found that users prefer this, especially on smaller devices, as it makes components (checkers, buttons, etc.) larger/easier to see and tap. Your device (iPhone 5s) has a larger width to height ratio. If you run BGNJ on devices with a smaller width to height ratio (such as an iPad or iPhone 4), the board shape will be closer to what you want.

We'll be releasing an update soon with new features. But currently, we don't have plans to implement checker dragging.

I play it on the iPad, and it looks pretty good. I particularly like the email match feature, which makes it much easier to review games after playing them. The app to play on FIBS makes you connect via iTunes to download the games, which so far I haven't bothered to do, so I end up playing all my games on NJ. It's a good app.
