For significant money: no room is remotely safe. BGroom is said to have lots of house bots.
I've never seen what I thought was fair vigorish in any room open to Americans. There is no backgammon room that is the equivalent of Poker Stars or Full Tilt.

I play at Carbon Poker, I certainly wouldn't say it's a great room, very few people and really crappy GUI. I would play at GamesGrid because of good GUI but they don't accept USA deposits. Play65 seems to want to jam you with viruses or so my Norton AV said.

I play at several places, but I think Ladbrokes is the most safe. I would consider any sum of money safe there (if I had that much). They've been in business for more than a hundred years. Otherwise, it's like in poker or odds betting. The smaller and newer, the less safe, or you can google the place or search at forums. If they've been involved in shady business it will turn up. Just remember to ignore all the players who think the site is rigged just because they lose

You might also want to check out TrueMoneyGames, great software. You'll also find freerolls and guaranteed tournaments there. Unfortunately there are not so many players, but looks like it's getting more and more. You'll find any stake between a few cents and a few hundred euros.

Lol - interesting how two people ^^ signed up to 2+2 with teh sole intention of suggesting we play at TMG.com

I agree with Slowkey. It is far too easy to create a BG bot using GNU/Snowie and unless you are really finding it tough to find an opponent or are playing for tiny sums of money, I really wouldnt suggest paying online...

Haha interesting indeed, looks like I'm not the only one into TMG, honestly I would have been surprised if nobody would share this opinion

When it comes to bots everyone feels they take the fun away, bots are difficult opponents, bots make no mistakes. On the other hand, bots are detectable. If you check out sites like play65 or TMG you'll notice that they have a whole security team to take care of these matters.

Bots are the killers for online backgammon platforms, losing players are unhappy players who don't deposit. I'd suggest to contact the support of these rooms if you feel like you're being cheated, they have all sorts of pros and technical equipment to check if anyone is using a bot. If the suspicion turns out to be correct the cheaters' accounts are closed and the money is usually distributed among the players who previously lost to them.

Cheers!

AFAIK - timing is the main detection method the online sites use to check if a player is a bot. It really isn't too difficult to use an RNG to vary the time in between moves or even make it so that the bot choses a slightly sub-optimal choice on a random basis (in case the sites cross reference moves against Snowie/GNU)

It's also very easy to disguise the Snowie/GNU such that even if the online BG software is monitoring your processes, you will still appear to be a human.

For those reasons, I find it unlikely that the sites catch anything near to the proportion of bots that would be necessary for me to be confident playing for anything > pennies.

Theoretically you could vary your error rates a little by choosing different skill levels for your backgammon bot, but the error rates would still remain very low most likely. If you make your bot too weak you'd probably lose at high stake games, don't forget, that's where the pros play usually.

Backgammon sites collect every single backgammon game, save it and analyze it, that should create a certain pattern. Chat might also be an issue with a bot, if the bot never replies or talks nonsense it would also fall out of the ordinary.

You'd have to be an ace programmer to implement these kind of features into a computer program btw, I wouldn't be capable of doing it. On the other hand I know this is a big issue on some backgammon platforms, that is certainly the only advantage backgammon platforms with a slightly lower traffic bear, it's less anonymous, even for the security teams.

Hello, all. I am an interloper with no previous posts on 2+2. I would just like to present my completely unbiased opinion that honestbackgammon.com is a really great place to play for real money. We have no bots there and all our regular players are fish, especially the ones that play for very high stakes!
