Not only is it not the end of the world, but if you are at a gammon-go score in a match (like 2-away 1-away Crawford, or trailing by a lot), then it's probably right to make the two point.
Chances are, you are pretty good if you got your rating up that high. Is it a play money rating or a real money rating? It's tough to figure out how much ratings mean though if you're playing for money, but I don't want to get into that. You're reading books and clearly winning, so you don't sound like a beginner to me.
You might try playing on FIBS and see what your rating is there. Also, a better indicator of your skill level is your error rate (if you analyze your games with gnuBG or something).
