When I 1st started playing backgammon there were some very active leagues and ladders that all played on the MSN gaming zone that I enjoyed playing in and even running a few. Since MS in their infinite wisdom disbanded the BG community there I have found it hard to find a social place to find a competitive, but still friendly game. The sites I am on now are either gambling based, filled with people more concerned about their ratings than anything else, just don't have enough traffic, or require monthly or yearly fees to access ladder or league play.

Does anyone know of a free site that has an active ladder or league community?

Try www.warpgammon.com. They're the best such group I know about. They organize tournaments and post results, while you and your opponent agree on a site where you will play the match. The tournaments are large and well-attended.
