Does anyone know why Backgammon Galaxy is resigning games randomly? about 1/2 of my games are having this happen, I have no idea why it just suddenly will say I have resigned the match

On the left side there is a clock running down. If you play too slow and the clock reaches zero the system resigns for you. To avoid this you have to play quicker and have an eye on the clock.

As cornelius said, it's because your clock ran out.

This system can be a bit glitchy, I've on occasion ended my turn "just in time", only for it to resign a few seconds later after my opponent already rolled. This might cause your resignation to seem even more random. But it's just the interface lagging behind a bit.

Here is an example, I was playing just now, it became my turn and approximately 3-4 seconds in I went to reach for the mouse and make a move and the "XXXXX has resigned the match" sign popped up before I could do anything. Very annoying as it is half the games and clearly my rating is false.

I've played hundreds of matches on Galaxy and never had this problem. Most likely you're playing at the 'Speed' level and running out of time. Try looking for matches with a 'Casual' time setting and you'll do better. Better yet, watch your clock setting during the match and notice how much time you actually have left.

Also make sure your volume is turned on and up as you get audible warnings as you approach the time limit.
