I have read that these two are among the best. They will both beat you, but only because they are just that good.

Caveat: I don't own an iPhone or iPad, so you should take these recommendations with a grain of salt.

I have an iphone 5s and I strongly recommend extreme gammon mobile

I have Backgammon NJ HD and it's pretty good. I have no comparison points though.

I would have gone with Extreme, but by the time I discovered it I had already purchased NJ, and having both just seems silly.

I've played NJ HD for years, and XG Mobile since its release, as well as every other iOS backgammon apps. I've played them all, and by "all", I mean "all". Forced to choose, I would take XG Mobile, but that's not saying much. I have both on my iPad and several others, but XG Mobile is the best of a bad bunch.

Although the iPad is the perfect backgammon device, the apps aren't up to par. I would highly recommend that players shell out the extra cash and get the full PC version of eXtreme Gammon, then get an iPad app if you can swing it.

eXtreme Gammon for PC is an outstanding program and I don't hesitate to recommend to everyone on this forum, but XG Mobile is not the same and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I use XG Mobile more to analyze positions than for actual play.
