White - Pips 26 (-72), Match -7 -7

Black - Pips 98 (+72), Match -7 -7
Black to Play 3-1

First game of a 7 point match.

Black hit a late shot, but it still looks bleak. White has 10 checkers off and Black doesn't have much of a board. Is there any hope here?

I gave up and just tried to save the gammon with 17/16 9/6. This turned out to be very wrong.

If you can hit the checker back on White's 2-point you'll have real winning chances. The right idea is 5/4* 6/3. Remember that saving a gammon instead of losing gains you 2 points, but turning a loss into a win gains you 4 points. It can pay to be aggressive.

There's another bonus to the play. Every checker that White hits becomes an extra checker back in White's board, ready to hit White's last checker as it comes around. Hitting here isn't nearly as dangerous as it looks.
