Adjust double point in a race at 3-away/2-away

Reading through the article about market window, we find out that when leading 2-away/3-away in a match but trailing in the current game with no gammons possible (pure race with no contact), if the opponent doubles, then we need at least 29% equity to take, as opposed to 22% in a money game.

This means that the formula 8-9-12 which tells us we can take when behind 12% of opponentís pip count needs to be adjusted for the match score.

I have already figured out that the 12% needs to be adjusted to around 8.5%, but the article does not mention how the double point needs to be adjusted.

In other words, what is the corresponding minimum pip lead required to double in a race when trailing 3-away/2-away in a match? In a money game itís 8% for an initial double and 9% for a redouble, how do we adjust them here?

Re: Adjust double point in a race at 3-away/2-away

These issues are discussed in one of the last chapters of Trice's _Backgammon Boot Camp_.

The specific criteria he gives wouldn't directly apply in your case since he uses a different racing count, not the 8/9/12% rule, but the general principles are:
  • If there is no redouble vig (as in your example), the gap between the doubling point and the dropping point widens
  • If the leader puts the match on the line by giving the opponent an automatic redouble, the gap narrows

These corrections are small, though. You double one pip earlier in the first case and one pip later in the second one.
